Roof Leaks

What to do when your roof leaks

When water gets in, focus first on safety and limiting damage. A few details can help explain the problem when you contact a roofer.

Start indoors and stay safe

If it is safe, move furniture and belongings away from the affected area and place a container under dripping water. Keep clear of wet electrical fittings and avoid touching them. If there is an immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service.

Do not climb onto the roof. Water can travel along roof materials before appearing indoors, so the visible stain may not be directly below the source.

Before you call

Make a useful record without going onto the roof

A concise description helps explain urgency and gives the roofer context before an inspection. You do not need to identify the source yourself.

Location

Mark the indoor signs

Note the room and ceiling area, whether water is dripping or staining, and whether the affected area is growing. Keep away from wet lights, sockets and fittings.

Timing

Describe the conditions

Record when it began, recent rain or wind, and whether the leak stops and returns. Mention any previous leak or repair in the same area.

Evidence

Take safe photographs

Photograph indoor damage from a stable, dry place. Include any roof change only if clearly visible from ground level; do not use a ladder or enter a roof space.

If water is near electrics, avoid the area and seek appropriate urgent help. For a roofing inspection or emergency call-out, use the roof repairs and leak detection service.
